You Keep Me

Track 4 • 3:41
Art for You Keep Me

The Story

We like to narrate our lives as grit. I made it through. I kept my head. I got lucky. Under that story is an old idol: I am my own keeper, and if I slip, nobody is underneath me. Fear feeds on that. So does pride. Both forget that the God of Israel does not hand His people the job of preserving their own souls.

The pilgrim song says it without romance. He will not let your foot be moved. He who keeps you will not slumber. He keeps you from all evil; He keeps your life; He keeps your going out and your coming in. That is not a charm against every hard day. Evil still touches the body, the name, the house. It means the Lord Himself is the one who guards the life He redeemed, and He does not clock out. Jude blesses the God who is able to keep you from stumbling and to present you blameless.

Stop crediting luck for mercy. Stop terrifying yourself with the thought that your hold is the only hold. Walk today as someone kept. Then live like it — not reckless, not self-saving — trusting the Keeper who does not sleep.

Associated Scripture

Psalm 121:3-8 (ESV): "He will not let your foot be moved; he who keeps you will not slumber. Behold, he who keeps Israel will neither slumber nor sleep. The Lord is your keeper; the Lord is your shade on your right hand. The sun shall not strike you by day, nor the moon by night. The Lord will keep you from all evil; he will keep your life. The Lord will keep your going out and your coming in from this time forth and forevermore."

Jude 24-25 (ESV): "Now to him who is able to keep you from stumbling and to present you blameless before the presence of his glory with great joy, to the only God, our Savior, through Jesus Christ our Lord, be glory, majesty, dominion, and authority, before all time and now and forever. Amen."

Lyrics

[Verse 1] First cry under hospital light Hands I didn't choose held tight Training wheels and summer heat I took the hill on my own feet Seventeen, I took the keys Packed a bag, I felt so free Every mile I thought I made You went before me on the way [Pre-Chorus] I call it luck, I call it grit You call it mercy, and You gave it [Chorus] You keep me You keep me Going out, coming in You keep me You keep me Even the valley, even then You keep me [Verse 2] The paycheck never lasted long I did the math to be the strong I turned my face the other way The talk I owed went still that day A washcloth on a small hot head I sat the night beside the bed I tried to be the man who stays You kept us through the middle days [Verse 3] Gray in the glass, a thinner skin The man I was is wearing thin I built a fence around my years Called it wisdom, called it fear The night I thought the dark would win You did not sleep. You kept me in. Not from the valley. Through the night. Your rod, Your staff. The only light. [Chorus] You keep me You keep me Going out, coming in You keep me You keep me Even the valley, even then You keep me [Bridge] I cannot keep a single day This heart of mine will drift away You made me. You will bear. You carry me, even there. [Chorus] You keep me You keep me Going out, coming in You keep me You keep me Even the valley, even then Still You keep me You keep me [Outro] You keep me Still You keep me You keep me
