Rubble

Track 7 • 3:52
Art for Rubble

The Story

Sometimes the false god finally loses, and what is left does not look like a victory. The affair is over, the image has cracked, the frantic religious performance has stopped, and in its place there is embarrassment, a thinner life, people who do not trust you yet. You expected relief. You got a bare room. It is tempting to call that bareness proof that God is finished with you, as if every hard thing after repentance were a sentence still being served.

Isaiah speaks to people who had gone after unjust gain. God had been angry, and He does not pretend otherwise. Then He says He will not contend forever, and He will not always be angry, because the spirit would grow faint before Him. The Holy One, high and lifted up, dwells with the contrite to revive them. A broken and contrite heart is not despised. That is a specific mercy for the lowly, not a claim that every sickness and loss is God settling a score. Some pain is simply a broken world. The ache that comes when a lie loses its place is different. It is where He has promised to meet the person who stops defending the lie.

Do not rebuild the old god because the new ground feels bare. Bring Him the contrite heart, and do not confuse that with paying Him back. Christ bore judgment so that repentant people would be revived and not destroyed. Start with the obedience in front of you. A rebuilt reputation can wait. A revived heart is His work.

Associated Scripture

Isaiah 57:15–16 (ESV): “For thus says the One who is high and lifted up, who inhabits eternity, whose name is Holy: ‘I dwell in the high and holy place, and also with him who is of a contrite and lowly spirit, to revive the spirit of the lowly, and to revive the heart of the contrite. For I will not contend forever, nor will I always be angry; for the spirit would grow faint before me, and the breath of life that I made.’”

Psalm 51:17 (ESV): “The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit; a broken and contrite heart, O God, you will not despise.”

Lyrics

[Verse 1] I watched the concrete fall in eighty-nine When human hands tore down the border line Brick by bitter brick we cleared the track But now we build the wall inside our spirit back A restless evil like a spark of fire We use our tongues to build the fences higher They stand as judge and jury in a digital cage So miserable and blind inside their holy rage [Pre-Chorus] He is our peace, who broke the heavy stone And tore down every wall to make us one [Chorus] Meet me at the wall, tear the bricks down! We don't need an excuse for a human crown! You can't drink the water from a bitter stream When you're fighting hard against the King's own dream! Meet me at the wall, tear the bricks down! [Verse 2] I'm reminded of the trenches in the winter freeze When tired soldiers fell down on their knees They dropped the rifles just to sing a carol clear And let a sudden love erase the mutual fear If mortal enemies can stop the war and cry Why do we let the static tell us who should die? [Chorus] Meet me at the wall, tear the bricks down! We don't need an excuse for a human crown! You can't drink the water from a bitter stream When you're fighting hard against the King's own dream! Meet me at the wall, tear the bricks down! [Bridge] Jesus walked right through the tribal line To tell the broken, "You are still designed" So drop your phone, and drop your heavy stone We cannot love each other from a digital throne The walls are high but they are tumbling down [Chorus] Meet me at the wall, tear the bricks down! We don't need an excuse for a human crown! You can't drink the water from a bitter stream When you're fighting hard against the King's own dream! Meet me at the wall, tear the bricks down! [Outro] Brick by brick, tear it down. Turn it to rubble now.
