Laodicea did not look like a scandal. It looked successful. The church said, "I am rich, I have prospered, and I need nothing." Jesus answered that they were wretched, pitiable, poor, blind, and naked. Half-hearted faith is not a harmless middle. It is the posture of people who have made comfort their god and then assumed Christ was fine with a polite share of the week.
He would rather they were cold or hot than tepid. Then He does something mercy always does: He counsels them to buy from Him what they cannot fake — gold refined by fire, white garments, salve for eyes that cannot see themselves. Be zealous, He says, and repent. Zeal here is not volume. It is a turned heart. Romans says do not be slothful in zeal; be fervent in spirit; serve the Lord. Fervor without repentance is just noise. Repentance without love grows cold again.
If your faith has settled into religious comfort, do not negotiate a smaller devotion. Agree with His diagnosis. Come to Him for what you lack. He is speaking to churches that still have His name on the door, and He is not bored. He loves them enough to reprove them, and He warns that lukewarm religion is something He will spit out of His mouth.
Associated Scripture
Revelation 3:15-19 (ESV): "I know your works: you are neither cold nor hot. Would that you were either cold or hot! So, because you are lukewarm, and neither hot nor cold, I will spit you out of my mouth. For you say, "I am rich, I have prospered, and I need nothing," not realizing that you are wretched, pitiable, poor, blind, and naked. I counsel you to buy from me gold refined by fire, so that you may be rich, and white garments so that you may clothe yourself and the shame of your nakedness may not be seen, and salve to anoint your eyes, so that you may see. Those whom I love, I reprove and discipline, so be zealous and repent."
Romans 12:11 (ESV): "Do not be slothful in zeal, be fervent in spirit, serve the Lord."

Lyrics
[Verse 1]
We got comfortable seats
And our coffee in hand
Watching the show from where we stand
Saying "Lord, Lord" with our lips real clean
While chasing the status on a glowing screen
James said faith without works is dead
We're double-minded, tossed around in our head
Living for Friday, praying on Sunday morning
Walking past the danger sign, ignoring the warning
[Pre-Chorus]
Riding fences starting to break
How long will you sleep before you wake?
[Chorus]
You're not cold, and you're not hot!
Trading away what Jesus bought!
Spit from His mouth cause you're faking the part
Giving Him a checklist instead of your heart!
Wake up, sleeper, burn with the fire!
Trade your worldly comfort for a holy desire!
[Verse 2]
We are enjoying our lives
while the world burns down!
Focused more on an earthly crown.
Scared of truth, afraid to offend,
Making culture your closest friend.
Do we please man or the Lord?
Walking paths that are wide and broad.
Rich in cash, but spiritually poor,
Leaving the Savior outside the door!
[Bridge]
Pick up your cross!
Drop safety nets!
He didn't die
So you stay content!
Buy refined gold,
Wear the white clothes!
Wash off the shame
That everyone knows!
No more lukewarm!
No more half-in!
Let the real change begin!
[Chorus]
You're not cold, but you're not hot!
Trading away what Jesus bought!
Spit from His mouth cause you're faking the part
Giving Him a checklist instead of your heart!
Wake up, sleeper, burn with the fire!
Trade your worldly comfort for a holy desire!
[Outro]
Be zealous and repent
The hour is late, the time is spent
No more lukewarm...
Burn with the fire.
