Idol Factory

Track 3 • 4:02
Art for Idol Factory

The Story

The thing you cannot stand to lose has a way of becoming a god. It might be the job that proves you matter, the image in the photo, the plan that must not fail, the child who has to turn out well so you can feel like a good parent. When that god disappoints, the heart does not go empty. It drafts a replacement by the end of the week. Success, control, being admired: new names, same worship. People say they cannot help anyone else because they already have too many problems. A real burden does take time. Look at the week anyway. The hours went to guarding the job, the image, the plan, the approval that must not be lost. Your excuse that you are overwhelmed may be true, but it is because these idols take up so much time in your calendar. Naming the habit is honest. It is not the same as stopping it.

God's first word at Sinai is that His people shall have no other gods before Him. Jesus puts love of God first and love of neighbor right with it. Paul calls covetousness idolatry, and he says humanity exchanged the truth about God for a lie and worshiped the creature instead of the Creator. That exchange is not a rare scandal. It is the ordinary heart. You will not shut it down with a resolution. A worshiper does not become neutral. "Put to death what is earthly in you" sits on a prior mercy: you have died with Christ, and your life is hidden with Him. The killing of rival loves is what His people do, not a project that makes them His. Helping the person next to you does not earn that mercy. It is what the hours can do once a smaller god stops spending them.

Name the thing you panic to lose. That panic is the rival. Then look at Jesus, who did not grasp at status, who died for idolaters, and who is a greater good than the thing you are afraid to lay down. Ask Him to be the God you actually want, not the one you mention while you serve something else.

Lyrics

[Verse 1] It's easy marching in the street With righteous anger in my feet It's easy shouting at the screen About the pharisees and the memes But when the evening shadows fall And I am left within my wall The quiet truth begins to speak The righteousness I claim is weak [Pre-Chorus] Yeah, I see the evil in the world out there I say, "Somebody fix it, somebody care!" But I've got my own life, I've got my own goals I'm too busy saving my own little soul Yeah, somebody should do it, somebody should bleed But don't look at me, 'cause I've got what I need [Chorus] I'm making gods that look like me I'm making chains I cannot see Lord, break the gears, set me free From this idol factory! [Verse 2] I want a kingdom where the poor are fed But I still hoard my daily bread I want a world where truth will reign But I still hide my secret shame We look outside to find the beast But the mirror shows it clear at least The vertical line is broken down Before we ever walk through town [Pre-Chorus] Yeah, I see the evil in the world out there I say, "Somebody fix it, somebody care!" But I've got my own life, I've got my own goals I'm too busy saving my own little soul Yeah, somebody should do it, somebody should bleed But don't look at me, 'cause I've got what I need [Chorus] I'm making gods that look like me I'm making chains I cannot see Lord, break the gears, set me free From this idol factory! [Outro] Stop the line. Lord, break the gears. From this idol factory.
