Night has a way of sounding like the final word. A diagnosis lingers. A prayer goes unanswered. Grief sits in the house after everyone else has gone to bed, and the heart starts to bargain: either God has forgotten, or I should fake a brighter mood so nobody worries. Both are unbelief. One denies His nearness. The other denies the pain.
David knew weeping that tarries for the night. He did not pretend the night was morning. In that psalm the night follows God’s displeasure and then His favor. Do not read every dark season as proof that He is angry with you. Suffering is not a verdict. What David does teach is that God turns mourning. Joy comes with the morning because God acts, not because sufferers are good at positive thinking. Jeremiah, sitting in the wreckage of Jerusalem, forced his hope back onto one fact: the steadfast love of the Lord never ceases, and His mercies are new every morning. That is not a promise that tomorrow will feel easy. It is a promise that God does not run out of mercy while you are still in the dark.
Wait on Him without lying about how dark it is. Lament is allowed. Despair is not the same thing as honesty. If you belong to Christ, this night is not your forever. His love did not cease when the lights went out, and it will still be there when you can see again.

Lyrics
[Verse 1]
Before the first dawn opened wide
Before the waters learned their blue
You held my name within Your sight
And all Your promises were true
I did not climb to reach Your grace
I did not buy the welcome home
You closed the distance on the cross
And made Your steadfast love my own
[Pre-Chorus]
So I lay down the heavy weight
Of every score I tried to keep
For grace was written in the stone
Where love runs wider than the deep
[Chorus]
You loved me long before all time
You gave Your Son, You made a way
Where I could never bridge the line
You cleared the debt my soul should pay
I turn from what You call sin
Not paying back the gift You gave
Your kindness draws the wanderer in
The cross has made the coward brave
[Verse 2]
When I have leaned on foolish pride
And bruised the ones Your hands have made
You never sweep the wrong aside
You call me out to heal the grave
Your mercy never says to stay
Your holy love draws near and speaks
The nail-pierced hands from Calvary
Remain the hands that lift the weak
[Pre-Chorus]
So I lay down my hollow plea
And bring the hidden to the light
The Savior bore the penalty
His Spirit guides the blind to sight
[Chorus]
You loved me long before all time
You gave Your Son, You made a way
Where I could never bridge the line
You cleared the debt my soul should pay
I turn from what You call sin
Not paying back the gift You gave
Your kindness draws the wanderer in
The cross has made the coward brave
[Bridge]
No work of mine could ever add
No loss of mine could ever take
My hope is anchored in the Lamb
The only life I cannot break
Before the universe was framed
Your covenant of peace was sound
Beyond the shadow of my shame
The lost is gathered and is found
[Outro]
Before the dawn, You set Your love
Through every failure, holding still
The Savior finished every debt
And grace is leading onward still
