Scarlet Cord (Rahab's Song)

Track 2 • 3:43
Art for Scarlet Cord (Rahab's Song)

The Story

Rahab is a gritty outcast with a checkered past, but when she meets the Isrealite spies she knows they are blessed. Recognizing the power of the God of Israel, she risks her life to hide these spies in her home built into the city wall. In return, she bargains for her family's safety. She was told to hang a scarlet cord in her window as a sign of the one who helped them. This story highlights themes of faith over pedigree and acting decisively to stand in the gap for others. Rahab eventually becomes a descendant of the Savior, illustrating that God uses unlikely people to accomplish His plans.

Joshua 2:18 "Behold, when we come into the land, you shall tie this scarlet cord in the window through which you let us down, and you shall gather into your house your father and mother, your brothers, and all your father's house." Lyrics

[Verse 1] I lived my life on the edge of the stone A house on the wall where the cold wind blown I heard the stories of the desert fire Of a God who rose while the kings expired The city is trembling, the gates are tight But I’m keeping a candle burning tonight I hid the men beneath the drying flax With the weight of the world upon my back [Verse 2] They call me a name I’d rather forget A life lived in shadows and paying a debt I saw the kings in their towers of gold But I saw a Power they couldn't hold So I hid the strangers, I gave 'em my word A secret between us that nobody heard "Save my mother and my father too" When the trumpet sounds, I’m sticking with you [Chorus] Tie that cord! Let the crimson fall. Mercy’s waiting for the low and small Tie that cord! Let it hang out wide. I’m choosing a hope on the other side Yeah, I’m choosing a hope on the other side [Verse 3] Now the city is ash and the dust has cleared The God of the strangers is the God I feared He didn’t leave me in the rubble and clay He carved out a path and He led the way An unlikely branch on a holy vine The blood of an outcast in the Savior's line [Bridge] The horns are blowing, the ground is shaking The idols are falling, the city is breaking The scarlet is hanging, the mercy’s defying! The wall is a-tumbling, the dust is a cloud But my house is standing, and my head is bowed! [Chorus] Tie that cord! Let the crimson fall. Mercy’s waiting for the low and small Tie that cord! Let it hang out wide. I’m choosing a hope on the other side Yeah, I’m choosing a hope on the other side [Outro] From the edge of the wall to the line of the King Listen to the song that the broken sing Boaz’s mother, a branch on the tree The faith of an outcast set the world free.
