One More Thing (Martha's Song)

Track 8 • 3:47
Art for x

The Story

When we think of Martha, she often gets a bad reputation for being distracted in the kitchen while her sister Mary chose the "better part." But One More Thing steps into the very relatable, anxious heart of a host trying to serve the Creator of the universe. Imagine the immense pressure! She wasn't just being busy for the sake of it; she was showing her love the best way she knew how—through hospitality, acts of service, and hard work.

This song captures the frantic mental loop so many of us fall into: the overwhelming need to do "just one more thing" to make everything perfect. Martha was running on empty, burdened by her own expectations. When she finally breaks down and complains to Jesus, His response is not a harsh rebuke, but a gentle, loving correction.

The lesson for us today is incredibly freeing. Jesus isn't asking for our exhausted, frantic perfection. He doesn't need us to run ourselves into the ground trying to earn His approval. He gently invites us to lay down our never-ending to-do lists, step away from the noise, and realize that only one thing is truly necessary: resting in His presence.

Psalm 127:1-2: "Unless the Lord builds the house, the builders labor in vain. Unless the Lord watches over the city, the guards stand watch in vain. In vain you rise early and stay up late, toiling for food to eat—for he grants sleep to those he loves."

Proverbs 19:21: "Many are the plans in a person’s heart, but it is the Lord’s purpose that prevails."

Luke 10:40: "But Martha was distracted by all the preparations that had to be made. She came to him and asked, 'Lord, don’t you care that my sister has left me to do the work by myself? Tell her to help me!'"

Luke 10:41-42: "'Martha, Martha,' the Lord answered, 'you are worried and upset about many things, but few things are needed—or indeed only one. Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her.'"

Lyrics

[Verse 1] The guest list is growing, the sun’s going down I’m breathless and busy, just spinning around There’s a Prophet in the parlor and dust on the shelf So I’m doing the work of ten women myself I’ve got bread in the oven and wine to be poured I’m making a masterpiece fit for the Lord If I don’t keep moving, I’m gonna stress And this Man deserves nothing less than the best! [Chorus] I’m fine, I’m fine, I’ve just got things to do If I don’t do ‘em, tell me, then who? I’m checking the boxes and clearing the plate I’m working so hard just to make it all great Yeah, I’m fine, I’m fine, I’m just busy, you see Working for Him... while He’s waiting for me! [Verse 2] Then I look in the corner and what do I see? My sister is sitting where I ought to be She’s staring at Him like there’s nothing to do While I’m sweating and burning and pushing it through I snapped at the Master: “Lord, tell her to move! I’ve got a household and more things to do!” I’m loud and I’m frantic, I’m losing my head While He’s offering life... I’m just offering bread! [Bridge] Then He said my name... twice. Like a quiet song in a world of clatter and noise. "Martha... Martha... you’re worried about much, But you’re missing the Only One you need to touch." The "Better Part" isn't a prize you can win It’s letting the quiet... finally... in. [Final Chorus] I’m fine... I’m fine... I’ve got nothing to do. If I don’t do ‘em... I’ll just be with You. I’m leaving the boxes and leaving the plate. It’s already finished, it’s already great. Yeah, I’m fine, I’m fine, I’m just resting, you see... He was waiting for me... and now I am free. [Outro] I’m fine... I’m fine... I’ve got one thing to do. I get to worship our Lord with you!
